Videos and Quizzes: how training works

Summary

Your training in Safe Pathways happens through pathways: a series of short videos, each followed by a quick quiz. This article walks through opening a pathway, how the lesson player works, what happens when you get a question wrong, and how your progress adds up to a certificate.

Who this is for

  • Volunteers working through any pathway
  • Church Administrators answering training questions

What you’ll need

Make sure you have:

  • A Volunteer account with at least one pathway assigned (it appears on your Home page)
  • A device with sound, using any modern browser
  • About 20 minutes. Most pathways finish in under 20 minutes, and you can stop and come back any time.

Before you start

Your church assigns pathways based on where you serve. Each pathway is a series of short video lessons, typically two to four minutes each, and most lessons end with a few quiz questions.

Lessons unlock in order. You can rewatch anything you’ve already passed and open the next lesson in line, but you can’t skip ahead. Your progress saves as you go, so closing the browser mid-pathway loses nothing.

Steps to work through a pathway

1. Open your pathway

On your Home page, find the pathway card under Your pathways and select Start Here (or Continue if you’re partway through). Each card also shows your status and any due date. For more on the cards themselves, see Volunteers: How to Start a Pathway.

2. Get your bearings in the lesson player

The left side lists every step in order: each lesson’s video (“VIDEO 1”) and its quiz (“QUIZ 1”), with the video length and number of questions. A checkmark fills in as you pass each step, and a star marks the finish. The right side holds the video itself, with two tabs underneath: About this lesson, and Resources for any extra links your trainer included.

3. Watch the video

Press play and watch. Most lessons ask you to finish the video before the quiz opens, and the quiz starts on its own when the video ends. If a lesson has no quiz, select Next when the video finishes.

4. Answer the quiz questions

Questions come one at a time. Select your answer and choose Check answer.

  • If you’re right, you’ll see “That’s right!” with a short explanation, then Next moves you on.
  • If you’re not, you’ll see “Not quite” with an explanation, plus Try Again. Many questions also offer Watch Again, which jumps the video straight to the part covering that topic. When you’re ready, Resume Quiz picks up exactly where you left off.
  • Answers you already got right are kept while you rewatch, so going back to the video never costs you progress.

5. Finish the quiz

After the last question you’ll see “Quiz complete” with your score. If you passed, Next takes you to the following lesson (or Complete Pathway if it was the last one). If your score is below the passing mark, the screen tells you the mark you need and offers Retake quiz.

6. Complete the pathway

When every lesson is passed, a “Pathway completed” screen appears. Select Complete Pathway to return to your Home page, where the card now reads Completed and the button changes to Certificate. To save or print it, see How to: View or download your certificate.

What happens next

Your completion is recorded right away, and your church can see it on their side, where it counts toward your overall screening. See Screening status: what Pending means for how training fits into the bigger picture.

Training renews on a schedule your church sets. As a renewal comes due, your pathway card flags it and a fresh run is assigned. Renewals go quicker than the first time through, since the material is familiar and you keep your certificate history.

Troubleshooting

The Next button isn’t appearing under the video

  • Most lessons require the video to finish before you can move on. Let it play to the end.
  • If the video has clearly ended and nothing happens, refresh the page. Your passed lessons are saved.

A lesson in the list is greyed out

  • Lessons unlock in order. Finish the current lesson’s quiz and the next one opens.
  • Lessons you have already passed stay open, so you can rewatch them any time.

The video won’t play at all

I keep getting a question wrong and can’t move on

  • Use Watch Again to jump back to the part of the video that covers the topic, then Resume Quiz.
  • Read the feedback under “Not quite”; it points at what the question is really asking.

I finished everything but my card still says In Progress

  • Refresh your Home page.
  • If it persists, sign out and back in. If it still shows In Progress the next day, contact your church administrator.

Notes

  • Most pathways take under 20 minutes: short videos with quick quizzes.
  • Lessons unlock in order, and you can rewatch passed lessons any time.
  • A wrong answer brings an explanation, a Try Again, and often a Watch Again jump straight to the relevant part of the video.
  • Correct answers are kept while you rewatch the video mid-quiz.
  • Completing every lesson completes the pathway and unlocks your certificate.
